The Distance Between Us by Kasie West: Review

RATING: 5/5 stars!

Author: Kasie West
Publisher: HarperTeen
Release date: July 2, 2013
Find it on Goodreads here!

SUMMARY (from Goodreads):

Seventeen-year-old Caymen Meyers studies the rich like her own personal science experiment, and after years of observation she’s pretty sure they’re only good for one thing—spending money on useless stuff, like the porcelain dolls in her mother’s shop.

So when Xander Spence walks into the store to pick up a doll for his grandmother, it only takes one glance for Caymen to figure out he’s oozing rich. Despite his charming ways and that he’s one of the first people who actually gets her, she’s smart enough to know his interest won’t last. Because if there’s one thing she’s learned from her mother’s warnings, it’s that the rich have a short attention span. But Xander keeps coming around, despite her best efforts to scare him off. And much to her dismay, she's beginning to enjoy his company.

She knows her mom can’t find out—she wouldn’t approve. She’d much rather Caymen hang out with the local rocker who hasn’t been raised by money. But just when Xander’s attention and loyalty are about to convince Caymen that being rich isn’t a character flaw, she finds out that money is a much bigger part of their relationship than she’d ever realized. And that Xander’s not the only one she should’ve been worried about.

REVIEW:

I am normally not a romance fan; especially NOT contemporary romance. I was one of the few that really didn't like TheFault in Our Stars, and every other contemporary book I've tried to read has bored me to death.

But I had read Kasie West's paranormal duology, PIVOT POINT and SPLIT SECOND, and loved it, so I decided to give THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US a try. And let me tell you, I am SO glad I did.

This book was just so cute. The writing, the witty banter, and the romance was all just so adorable. Caymen's sarcasm with Xander was great, and I was definitely laughing out loud quite a bit while I read.

Plus, it was so clean. One of my main worries with contemporary novels is the "clean" factor (meaning no sex/swearing/violence), but this one was almost squeaky clean. Only one slightly detailed make-out scene. It was so refreshing!

So now, after this book, I will read anything that Kasie West writes. Anything. I'll even read her grocery lists.

Overall, THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US was a fantastically adorable book. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants a cute, fast summer read!

CONTENT: One slightly detailed make-out scene. No sex, swearing, or violence of any kind.

Shiver (Wolves of Mercy Falls #1) by Maggie Stiefvater: Review

RATING: 3.5/5 stars!

Author: Maggie Stiefvater
Publisher: Scholastic Press
Release date: August 1, 2009
Find it on Goodreads here!

SUMMARY (from Goodreads):

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without.

Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human… until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human—or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever.

REVIEW:

I am probably one of the last people on earth to read this book. It was really hyped a couple of years ago, so I bought it, but it sat on my shelf, waiting, tempting me to read it, but I never got around to it. for a while, I had totally forgotten about it.

Then this book, called THE RAVEN BOYS, came along. I read it and LOVED it! And it just so happened that this author had written another book a few years back, called SHIVER, and I just so happened to have a copy of it sitting RIGHT THERE on my shelf. So I read it. And while I did not think it was the best book ever, I still really enjoyed it.

The werewolf mythology was so cool. It broke away from the standard idea that werewolves only shift during the full moon came around. These werewolves shift with the temperature. So in the summer, when it is warm, they're human, but when it starts to get cold again, they shift back into werewolves for the winter.

This was probably my favorite thing about the book. It was so unique, intriguing, and fun to learn about.

The downfall with this book was the romance. I felt that there was way too much focus on the romance, when other aspects of the story could have been explored more. I myself am not a romance fan, so this made the book a bit boring for me at times.  Don't get me wrong, a little romance is good, but I'd rather it take a backseat to everything else in the story.

Overall, I really enjoyed SHIVER. If you are a fan of werewolves and romance, I highly suggest picking this book up!

CONTENT: Descriptive kissing and making out, and two of the characters have sex, but it is not really described. It's also pretty violent and disturbing at times.

Echoes of Us (The Hybrid Chronicles #3) by Kat Zhang: Early review

RATING: 5/5 stars!

Author: Kat Zhang
Publisher: HarperCollins
Release Date: September 16, 2014
Previous books in the trilogy: What's Left of Me,(book 1), Once We Were (book 2)
Find it on Goodreads here!

SUMMARY(from Goodreads):

To change the world, I may lose everything

All Eva ever wanted was the chance to be herself. But in the Americas, to be hybrid—to share your body with a second soul—is not tolerated past childhood. Now Eva and Addie, her sister soul, are constantly on the move, hiding from the officials who seek to capture them. But the tide is changing. A revolution is brewing, and people are starting to question the hybrids' mistreatment.

Then Marion, an ambitious reporter, offers Eva and Addie a daring proposal: If they go undercover and film the wretched conditions of a hybrid institution, she will not only rescue them, she'll find a way to free Jackson, the boy Addie loves. It's risky, and Eva will have to leave Ryan and her friends behind, but if she succeeds, it could also tip the scales forever and lead to hybrid freedom.

As Eva and Addie walk into danger, they cling to each other and the hope of a better future. But the price they might pay is higher than they ever could have imagined.

REVIEW:

I have tried to write this review several times, and I'm still having trouble finding the right words to describe this book. I'm not quite sure why, but the words I am coming up with are so inadequate for describing this story and how fantastically amazing it is. So I am apologizing in advance for my poor choice of words.

As always with trilogy endings, I will try to keep this brief so I can avoid spoilers.

This trilogy is so...amazing. The way the story is crafted is superb, and the characters are molded so perfectly. Eva and Addie's development from book one to book three is fantastic. The concept is so unique, and the writing flows so well.

The ending was perfect. SO PERFECT. I felt satisfied with everything.

Overall, ECHOES OF US did not disappoint in the slightest. I highly recommend reading this trilogy is you have not done so already!

CONTENT: This book was very clean. Kissing is the only thing content-wise, and that isn't even detailed a whole lot.

Waiting on Wednesday (11): This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner

"Waiting on Wednesday" is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week's "waiting on" is...

This Shattered World
by Amie Kaufman and Megan Spooner

Publication date: December 23, 2014
Publisher: Disney-Hyperion

SUMMARY(from Goodreads):

The second installment in the epic Starbound trilogy introduces a new pair of star-crossed lovers on two sides of a bloody war.

Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac should never have met.

Lee is captain of the forces sent to Avon to crush the terraformed planet's rebellious colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating the insurgents.

Rebellion is in Flynn's blood. Terraforming corporations make their fortune by recruiting colonists to make the inhospitable planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon, and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion.

Desperate for any advantage in a bloody and unrelentingly war, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and Lee cross paths: he returns to base with her as prisoner. But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape the rebel base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war.

The stunning second novel in the Starbound trilogy is an unforgettable story of love and forgiveness in a world torn apart by war.

I read THESE BROKEN STARS earlier this year (My review!), and I am unbelievably excited for this one.

As Ruby sets out across a desperate, lawless country to find Liam—and answers about the catastrophe that has ripped both her life and America apart—she is torn between old friends and the promise she made to serve the League. Ruby will do anything to protect the people she loves. But what if winning the war means losing herself?

REVIEW (spoiler free):

October 22, 2013 is the day I finished this book. And have the feels lessened at all?

Let's start out with my saying, this is one of the best books I've ever read. EVER. I love it so much.

I was really nervous to start it. The bridge novella, IN TIME, left me a blubbering idiot, and that was only 90 pages. I wasn't sure I could handle a whole 500 pages of that.

But nevertheless, I started it anyways. And about 2 chapters in, I was crying. That whole book was just a mess of feelings. Especially with Liam...

And that one scene...with Liam and Ruby...at the gas station...

Well, I don't want to be spoilery, so I'll keep this brief.

The writing was stunning. The characters were so well-developed and flawed. The ending had me in tears. The whole book was just....beautiful.

In short, this book was just...

If you have not started this series, you definitely should. It is a must-read.

CONTENT: Kissing, but it never goes any farther than that. All pretty much the same as the first book, although there is a bit more violence, but none of it is very detailed.

Only Ruby has any power over him, and just one slip could lead to Clancy wreaking havoc on their minds.

But internal strife may destroy their only chance to free the "rehabilitation camps" housing thousands of other Psi kids.

Meanwhile, reunited with Liam, the boy she would-and did-sacrifice everything for to keep alive, Ruby must face the painful repercussions of having tampered with his memories of her. Currently reading: The Distance Between Us by Kasie West

I finished The Road by Cormac McCarthy last night, and I'm not quite sure what to think of it. My mind still cannot form a coherent thought about it.

I am currently about 10 pages into The Distance Between Us by Kasie West, and I already know I'm going to love it. Then again, I'm pretty sure I'll love anything Kasie West writes.

Today, I'm aiming to read The Distance Between Us and get a little bit into The Chaos of Stars by Kiersten White. Not sure this will happen, because I have golf practice, but I will still try!!

Booktubeathon 2014!

For those who don't know what the Booktubeathon is, check out the informational video HERE!

Basically, the Booktubeathon is a week long readathon with a bunch of challenges and other fun stuff. Even though I am unable to make videos on Youtube, I will sill be participating because this will really help me get my TBR down.

Without further ado, here is my Booktubeathon TBR!!

CHALLENGE #1: Read a book with red on the cover.

For this challenge I will be reading THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US by Kasie West

CHALLENGE #2: Read a book from the genre you've read the least this year.

I have only read one contemporary book this year, so THE DISTANCE BETWEEN US completes this challenge too.

CHALLENGE #3: Read and watch a book to movie adaptation.

For this, I will be reading THE ROAD by Cormac McCarthy.

CHALLENGE #4: Read a book that someone picks out for you.

I asked my little sister, and she picked out SKY RAIDERS by Brandon Mull.

CHALLENGE #5: Read a book with pictures in it.

THE CHOAS OF STARS by Kiersten White doesn't exactly have pictures in it, but there's some flowery designs at the beginning of every chapter, so I'm counting it.

CHALLENGE #6: Start and finish a series.

I will be reading the WINTERCRAFT trilogy by Jenna Burtenshaw.

CHALLENGE #7: Read seven books or an average of 300 pages per day.

There are seven books in my pile. I doubt I'll finish them all, but I am going to try!

I will try to post blog updates every day, and I will post Instagram updates regularly. You should follow me! http://instagram.com/ya_book_lover

The Vicious Deep, The Savage Blue, The Vast and Brutal Sea by Zoraida Cordova: trilogy review

TRILOGY RATING: 5/5 stars!

Author: Zoraida Cordova
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire

SUMMARY of THE VICIOUS DEEP (from Goodreads):

For Tristan Hart, everything changes with one crashing wave.
He was gone for three days. Sucked out to sea in a tidal wave and spit back ashore at Coney Island with no memory of what happened. Now his dreams are haunted by a terrifying silver mermaid with razor-sharp teeth.

His best friend Layla is convinced something is wrong. But how can he explain he can sense emotion like never before? How can he explain he's heir to a kingdom he never knew existed? That he's suddenly a pawn in a battle as ancient as the gods.

Something happened to him in those three days. He was claimed by the sea...and now it wants him back.

REVIEW:

This trilogy is the perfect summer read, EVER. The characters, the plot, the mythology....it was all so light and great, and just pure fun.

Book one, THE VICIOUS DEEP, is amazing. It introduces the characters and sets up the plot for the rest of the books perfectly.

Tristan? Is that you?

Tristan, the protagonist, is one of the best male main characters I have read in a long time. He's witty, awkward, arrogant, good-looking, and caring all at the same time. And on top of it all, he's a merman. He's pretty much the total package.

The rest of the characters are pretty freaking awesome as well. Kurt is great, and his conversations with Tristan were hilarious. Layla was a great female lead, and Thalia, Marty, Frederick, and Gwen were all fantastic as well.

Book two, THE SAVAGE BLUE, is by far my favorite book in the trilogy. I read it in three and a half hours, and I do not regret losing sleep to finish this one. It had absolutely EVERYTHING in it. Action, intrigue, and an INSANE PLOT TWIST THAT LEFT ME STARING AT A WALL FOR 10 MINUTES. THANK YOU FOR THAT, ZORAIDA. :)

Book three, THE VAST AND BRUTAL SEA, was still really good, but I didn't feel it was as good as the first two. Things just happened a little too fast for me, and I felt it could've been a bit longer. But still, I loved it. The story was wrapped up so well, and even though there were some emotionally crippling character deaths,

What I really loved though was Tristan's character development. He started out as an immature teenager, but he really matured and came into his own in the end.

Overall, THE VICIOUS DEEP was a fantastic trilogy and a great summer read. I highly recommend it!!

NOW FOR THE MERMAN GIFS!!!

Ok, I'm done. :)

CONTENT: Two characters have sex in the third book, but it is barely described at all. Tristan's previous sexual excursions are mentioned, but never described, and also some innuendoes. Multiple uses of the f-word and a few other words, and moderate violence.

Waiting on Wednesday (9): Invaded by Melissa Landers

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

This week's "waiting on" is...

Invaded
by Melissa Landers!

Publication date: February 3, 2015
Publisher: Disney-hyperion

SUMMARY (from Goodreads):

The romantic sequel to Alienated takes long-distance relationships to a new level as Cara and Aelyx long for each other from opposite ends of the universe...until a threat to both their worlds reunites them.

Cara always knew life on planet L’eihr would be an adjustment. With Aelyx, her L’eihr boyfriend, back on Earth, working to mend the broken alliance between their two planets, Cara is left to fend for herself at a new school, surrounded by hostile alien clones. Even the weird dorm pet hates her.

Things look up when Cara is appointed as human representative to a panel preparing for a human colony on L’eihr. A society melding their two cultures is a place where Cara and Aelyx could one day make a life together. But with L’eihr leaders balking at granting even the most basic freedoms, Cara begins to wonder if she could ever be happy on this planet, even with Aelyx by her side.

Meanwhile, on Earth, Aelyx, finds himself thrown into a full-scale PR campaign to improve human-L’eihr relations. Humans don’t know that their very survival depends on this alliance: only Aelyx’s people have the technology to fix the deadly contamination in the global water supply that human governments are hiding. Yet despite their upper hand, the leaders of his world suddenly seem desperate to get humans on their side, and hardly bat an eye at extremists’ multiple attempts on Aelyx’s life.

The Way clearly needs humans’ help . . . but with what? And what will they ask for in return?

I absolutely LOVED Alienated. (My review) I am so eager to read this one!

Discussion post: Book to movie adaptions.

Hey ya'll, it's Marie here. I've been thinking about doing discussion posts for a while now, and I've finally decided to start doing it.

So, because I just saw the VAMPIRE ACADEMY movie, I want to talk about book to movie adaptations. The good...and the bad.

To be completely honest, I really liked this movie. Zoey Deutch was the perfect Rose, and while wasn't crazy about Lucy Fry as Lissa at first, I really grew to like her. Zoey and Lucy's chemistry together really captured Rose and Lissa's. And the male supporting cast was not bad either.

And yet, only a whopping 10% of critics on Rotten Tomatoes actually liked it. I didn't know why so many people hated it, but when I got to thinking about it, it made sense. I feel like the way they marketed it was wrong. They made it sound like it was supposed to be a mash-up of Mean Girls and Twilight, but it is really something totally separate from both of those movies.  Sure, it has a Mean Girls vibe to it, but I think people went into it expecting something totally different than what they got.

Divergent, on the other hand, I really didn't like all that much. I loved the books (the first two, anyways), and I was impressed that they stayed close to the story, but I feel that this one failed with the actors and the set.

First, the actors for Peter, Will, and Al all looked way too similar. I kept getting confused on who was who. Second, I feel like they tried to make Shailene Woodley a Jennifer Lawrence, when she's not. Don't get me wrong, she's still a great actress, but the way they shot the camera angles and put so much focus on her face reminded me too much of what they did with Jennifer Lawrence in the Hunger Games. (But I still love them both.)

The other issue I had was the set. It was just so....plain. I understood Abnegation being plain, but I was disappointed with how boring the Dauntless compound was. It just looked like a basement in a warehouse. They could have done more to make it look really badass and less plain.

There are other adaptions though that, for me, hit everything spot on such as....

Aragorn *swoon*

These movies were almost perfect. Even though they left some characters out and changed things around a bit, the whole essence of these movies captured the books perfectly. THIS IS HOW ADAPTIONS SHOULD BE DONE. YOU GO PETER JACKSON!!

The Hunger Games did a great job of this too. I had doubts about Jennifer Lawrence at first, but her performance blew me away. The rest of the cast is great, AND it stayed true to the story. DOUBLE WIN!

Of course, there is also the amazing-ness that is Harry Potter. For EIGHT WHOLE MOVIES they stayed true to the story, and had a perfect cast, who all aged very well. *cough* Neville *cough*

Then you have those that didn't work out so well, like Percy Jackson, but we're not even going to get into those, or else this would turn into a rant.

What do you all think? What were some adaptions that you thought were good or bad? COMMENT AWAY!!

Alienated (Alienated #1) by Melissa Landers: Review

RATING: 5/5 stars!

Author: Melissa Landers

SUMMARY (from Goodreads):

Two years ago, the aliens made contact. Now Cara Sweeney is going to be sharing a bathroom with one of them.

Handpicked to host the first-ever L’eihr exchange student, Cara thinks her future is set. Not only does she get a free ride to her dream college, she’ll have inside information about the mysterious L’eihrs that every journalist would kill for. Cara’s blog following is about to skyrocket.

Still, Cara isn’t sure what to think when she meets Aelyx. Humans and L’eihrs have nearly identical DNA, but cold, infuriatingly brilliant Aelyx couldn’t seem more alien. She’s certain about one thing, though: no human boy is this good-looking.

But when Cara's classmates get swept up by anti-L'eihr paranoia, Midtown High School suddenly isn't safe anymore. Threatening notes appear in Cara's locker, and a police officer has to escort her and Aelyx to class.

Cara finds support in the last person she expected. She realizes that Aelyx isn’t just her only friend; she's fallen hard for him. But Aelyx has been hiding the truth about the purpose of his exchange, and its potentially deadly consequences. Soon Cara will be in for the fight of her life—not just for herself and the boy she loves, but for the future of her planet.

REVIEW:

Before I start my review, can we just take a moment to appreciate this cover? The font! The colors! The people!

Now that that is out of the way....ALIENATED was absolutely fantastic. I wasn't quite sure about it at first, but as I delved more into the story, I grew to love the story (and Aelyx) even more.

"Hips of that width are likely to pass live offspring without complications."

Aelyx was one of the best male leads I have read in a long time. He was so awkward at times, but that made him even more attractive than he already was. And he was hilarious. That quote about the hips, though. *dies of laughter*

Cara was really awesome too. Most of the time, I find the female leads in books to be annoying at times, but I never found Cara annoying. She was so refreshing. I loved that she never took crap from anyone, especially her annoying ex-boyfriend.

The world Melissa created was absolutely fantastic too. Most of the book still took place on earth, but I found the planet L'eihr fascinating. I hope we get to see more of it in the next book!

Overall, ALIENATED is a must read for sci-fi fans...and romance lovers...actually, everyone should read it. It will not disappoint!

CONTENT: Kissing, talk of going "all the way", but no sex ever happens; no swearing I can recall, and hardly any violence.
