The Vicious Deep, The Savage Blue, The Vast and Brutal Sea by Zoraida Cordova: trilogy review

TRILOGY RATING: 5/5 stars!

Author: Zoraida Cordova
Publisher: Sourcebooks Fire

SUMMARY of THE VICIOUS DEEP (from Goodreads):

For Tristan Hart, everything changes with one crashing wave.
He was gone for three days. Sucked out to sea in a tidal wave and spit back ashore at Coney Island with no memory of what happened. Now his dreams are haunted by a terrifying silver mermaid with razor-sharp teeth.

His best friend Layla is convinced something is wrong. But how can he explain he can sense emotion like never before? How can he explain he's heir to a kingdom he never knew existed? That he's suddenly a pawn in a battle as ancient as the gods.

Something happened to him in those three days. He was claimed by the sea...and now it wants him back.

REVIEW:

This trilogy is the perfect summer read, EVER. The characters, the plot, the mythology....it was all so light and great, and just pure fun.

Book one, THE VICIOUS DEEP, is amazing. It introduces the characters and sets up the plot for the rest of the books perfectly.

Tristan? Is that you?

Tristan, the protagonist, is one of the best male main characters I have read in a long time. He's witty, awkward, arrogant, good-looking, and caring all at the same time. And on top of it all, he's a merman. He's pretty much the total package.

The rest of the characters are pretty freaking awesome as well. Kurt is great, and his conversations with Tristan were hilarious. Layla was a great female lead, and Thalia, Marty, Frederick, and Gwen were all fantastic as well.

Book two, THE SAVAGE BLUE, is by far my favorite book in the trilogy. I read it in three and a half hours, and I do not regret losing sleep to finish this one. It had absolutely EVERYTHING in it. Action, intrigue, and an INSANE PLOT TWIST THAT LEFT ME STARING AT A WALL FOR 10 MINUTES. THANK YOU FOR THAT, ZORAIDA. :)

Book three, THE VAST AND BRUTAL SEA, was still really good, but I didn't feel it was as good as the first two. Things just happened a little too fast for me, and I felt it could've been a bit longer. But still, I loved it. The story was wrapped up so well, and even though there were some emotionally crippling character deaths,

What I really loved though was Tristan's character development. He started out as an immature teenager, but he really matured and came into his own in the end.

Overall, THE VICIOUS DEEP was a fantastic trilogy and a great summer read. I highly recommend it!!

NOW FOR THE MERMAN GIFS!!!

Ok, I'm done. :)

CONTENT: Two characters have sex in the third book, but it is barely described at all. Tristan's previous sexual excursions are mentioned, but never described, and also some innuendoes. Multiple uses of the f-word and a few other words, and moderate violence.
